Job Summary
As a mid-level solar installer, you will work with clients and customers to design and install solar power systems (solar photovoltaic or solar thermal). You will sell, deliver, install, service, and maintain solar equipment at residential and commercial sites.
Also, you will be required to coordinate with electricians, roofers, and other trades to complete installations safely and efficiently.
Duties and Responsibilities
As a solar installer, you’ll be responsible for:
- Conduct site assessments and load appraisals (including shade analysis, hazard assessment, and energy generation estimates).
- Obtain necessary permits and work with inspectors to ensure installations meet code requirements.
- Coordinate with electricians, plumbers, engineers, and roofers to integrate solar equipment with building systems.
- Install and mount solar panels, inverters, batteries, and related hardware; run conduit, wiring, and grounding for PV systems.
- Test, commission, and troubleshoot installed systems using specialized and standard test equipment.
- Inspect, calibrate, repair, replace, and adjust electrical components to maintain system performance.
- Prepare and maintain work schedules, technical reports, site plans, cost estimates, and invoices.
Qualifications and Skills
- Technical Education
Completion of a 2-year technical diploma or equivalent trades training (e.g., electrical or sustainable energy technology), or equivalent experience installing solar PV systems.
- Certifications
Licensed electrician or registered electrical apprentice as required by provincial regulations. Must hold safety tickets (e.g., fall protection, first aid) and understand electrical codes.
- Practical Skills
Comfortable working at heights and climbing ladders or scaffolding, with the ability to lift/move heavy equipment safely.
Additionally, proficiency with hand and power tools (drills, saws, multimeters) is required. Experience reading technical drawings and wiring diagrams is a plus.
- Core Competencies
Strong hand-eye coordination and dexterity; attention to detail; basic math and electrical principles. Good communication skills and the ability to follow verbal and written instructions closely.
Additionally, the ideal candidate must be team-oriented, reliable, and customer-focused.
Experience Requirements
- Minimum of 2–4 years of experience in solar panel installation, electrical, or construction work. Residential and/or commercial PV installation experience is preferred.
- Provide a track record of safe, high-quality solar or electrical installations. Experience with varied roof types (shingle, metal, and flat) and mounting systems is an asset.
- Must have a valid driver’s license and willingness to travel to job sites nationwide.
Work Environment
Must be comfortable working in:
- Physically demanding environments where you have to spend most of the time outdoors at client sites, including rooftops, attics, basements, or utility rooms.
- Comfortable working at heights is common; strict adherence to safety protocols (e.g, fall protection gear) is required.
- Can do heavy lifting (panels, racks, batteries over 30 kg), and handling of tools and equipment is required.
Working Hours
- Full-time position, with 40 hours per week
- Standard schedule is Monday–Friday, but overtime or weekend work may be needed to meet project deadlines.
- Also, the schedule may be influenced by weather and daylight conditions.
Compensation & Benefits
- $26.00 per hour on average (Depends on work experience)
